Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Donny van de Beek and Jadon Sancho underperformed in their Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham.

Van de Beek and Sancho both completed 90 minutes as United were ejected from the domestic cup competition at Old Trafford and the duo could struggle to start against Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.

"I can't complain about the effort," Solskjaer said. "It has something to do with the rhythm, the confidence. Their best form isn't there as they haven't played much.

"Good for them to get time, but we didn't get the result.

"So like I said, there was a bit lacking in terms of quality, but not effort."
