Manchester United’s new summer signing Matthijs de Ligt may have to wait to make his full debut.

The Red Devils defeated Fulham in the Premier League curtain-raiser, courtesy of a late goal from Joshua Zirkzee.

Even though Zirkzee got the Man of the Match award, Harry Maguire was the standout performer.

The England international was a rock at the back, displaying defensive prowess that left a lasting impression.

Fulham got a break in the second half and had two of their attackers against Maguire.

The 31-year-old hung out his leg to block the all-important pass to bail United out.

Maguire was a towering asset in defence, using his height to great advantage as he dominated the aerial game, winning five out of six duels.

He also racked up five crucial clearances and made three interceptions.

He would have wanted to be sharper with his ball distribution. His passing success rate was only 83 percent, as he misplaced ten passes.

His cautious approach was understandable, given the game’s tight balance. In a deadlock, defenders often prioritise safety over creativity.

De Ligt is only two inches shorter than Maguire and may offer the same solidity at the back.

There is little doubt that United’s £43 million signing will swiftly carve out his place as the first-choice partner for Lisandro Martinez.

However, it will be difficult for Erik ten Hag to drop Maguire after a good showing.

If Maguire is handed the starting spot again, De Ligt will likely come off the bench for him as he did against Fulham.

United travel to the Amex Stadium to face Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. The Seagulls defeated Everton 3-0 on the opening weekend.
