Manchester United and Chelsea on alert as Sergio Ramos prepares to leave Real Madrid

According to The Express, Manchester United and Chelsea are on alert as Sergio Ramos prepares to leave Real Madrid at the end of the month.

The veteran defender is one of the finest defenders of his generation and leaves Los Blancos after 16 years of glorious service. During that time, he made 671 appearances for the club, scoring 101 goals and assisting 40 more. (h/t Transfermarkt)

The departure of Ramos draws to a close an era at the Santiago Bernabeu. While there have been efforts to continue the association, neither he nor Real could come to an agreement over a new contract.

Ramos is one of the player’s on United’s radar as they look to reinforce their backline this summer. Despite being 35, the Spaniard has a couple of years left in his lank and add much to the Red Devils backline.

Securing the veteran ace would not just add leadership to the United defence but also know-how of how to win the biggest trophies. After all, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has shown an inability to make the final leap in recent seasons. Adding Ramos to the mix could prove to be the difference when we need it the most.

European Champions Chelsea are also in the fray for the defender. The Blues brought in Thiago Silva on a free last summer and the Brazilian rolled back the years in a grossly successful season at the Bridge.

United too have their own share of success with veterans in the Bosman market. Edinson Cavani joined the club on deadline day and went on to play a major role for us last season. While Ramos is not the overwhelming force he once was, he remains a dominant defender capable of doing a job. There is no reason why he too cannot have a similar impact as Cavani at Old Trafford.

United are far from a position where one or two signings can turn them into title contenders. Securing Ramos on a free transfer could free up money that can be used elsewhere. Whether that is a ploy the club is willing to employ remains to be seen.
