Manchester United star Diogo Dalot called up for the Euros

According to Manchester Evening News, Portugal have called up Manchester United star Diogo Dalot for the European Championships.

The defending champions were hit with a setback earlier today when defender Joao Cancelo tested positive for COVID-19. The Manchester City ace has now been ruled out of the tournament paving the way for Dalot to replace him in the squad.

One man’s misfortune is another’s opportunity. Dalot has now been presented with a golden chance that seemed unfathomable even a month ago.

The 22-year-old is seen as surplus to requirements at United and spent the last season on loan at AC Milan. While he did get more opportunities at the San Siro, his performances were a mixed bag of results.

Portugal are one of the teams to watch in the tournament and have been drawn alongside France and Germany in group F. While it is debatable if Dalot will get many chances, the experience will do him good. Whether this bit of good fortune will mark a turning point in his career remains to be seen.

It is no secret that United are in the market for a new right-back this summer who can compete alongside Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The Red Devils have been heavily linked with Kieran Trippier but will need to fork out €40m for his services.

It remains to be seen if a strong showing by Dalot will convince United that the 22-year-old could be their man. One of Jose Mourinho’s final signings at Old Trafford, his fortune could be finally taking a turn for the better. Portugal take on Hungary in their opener on Tuesday.

What Dalot makes from the opportunity given to him remains to be seen. A strong showing could at the very least make potential suitors sit up and take notice of his availability this summer. At just 22, the best years of his career are ahead of him.
