Aaron Wan-Bissaka has hit the ground running since joining Manchester United in the summer of 2019. Brought in for big money, the 23-year-old is the club’s first-choice right-back.
This has seen him come into competition with some of the best attackers in English football. The likes of Raheem Sterling, Sadio Mane, Son Heung-Min are all world-class players and have presented Wan-Bissaka with different types of challenges.
Speaking to the club’s official site, the right-back has now come out and revealed the one opposition player who he found was a cut above the rest.
“I’d say Neymar.”
Wan-Bissaka believes Paris Saint-Germain’s Brazilian ace Neymar is the toughest opponent he has faced.
“That was a player that was quite challenging, but I was always up for it, and I enjoyed it, the experience, to be playing against him. That meant a lot.”
One of the best players in world football, Neymar is a handful for defenders. Wan-Bissaka, to his credit, largely held his own and enjoyed the experience of having gone up against the Samba star.
The Brazilian is notorious for drawing fouls and exaggerating contact. Wan-Bissaka believes the best approach to deal with him was to avoid giving away any unnecessary fouls.
“He’s a player that likes to draw fouls, and so for me, if I’m up against him, it’s [the task is] just not to give him any fouls because that’s what he wants.”
United faced off against PSG twice this season in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League. While Wan-Bissaka held his own against Neymar in Paris, the Brazilian had the last laugh in the return fixture. He scored twice at Old Trafford in what was a 3-1 loss for us.
Unlike Neymar, Wan-Bissaka is still learning his trade. With his best years ahead of him, the defender will hopefully go on to establish himself as a world-class right-back.
