Newcastle United have stolen a march on Manchester United in the pursuit of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, according to Slovenian outlet Delo.

The 22-year-old forward, who has attracted interest from top Premier League clubs over the last few months, appears increasingly poised to join the Magpies as they intensify their efforts to secure his signature.

Arsenal were the favourites to sign Sesko earlier this summer, and despite the Gunners’ failed attempt at landing him, he is still expected to leave the Red Bull Arena and has a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ in place to facilitate that.

Both Newcastle and Manchester United have been in discussions with the player’s camp trying to agree personal terms before approaching Leipzig with an offer.

While Manchester United seemed to be front-runners initially despite their lack of European football, Newcastle have moved ahead after significantly upping their offer to the player.

Sesko has reportedly given Newcastle the green light to commence negotiations with Leipzig, who are holding out for a guaranteed €75 million plus add-ons.

Should Sesko end up completing a move to St James’ Park, this would have ramifications for the future of Alexander Isak.

Newcastle rejected a formal bid from Liverpool for Isak on Friday and are not expected to part ways with the player until a replacement is brought in.

Newcastle have suffered disappointment on multiple fronts during the summer window so far, but Sesko’s arrival would be a welcome development.

Eddie Howe’s side are also close to tying Tino Livramento down to a new contract, fending off interest from Manchester City.
