Manchester United captain Michael Carrick has revealed he underwent a minor heart procedure earlier this season.

Carrick has so far made just one appearance this campaign – against Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup in September – and the reason for his absence had hitherto not been made public.

But in a post to his official Twitter account on Friday evening, the 35-year-old explained he has been sidelined after doctors discovered he had an “irregular heart rhythm”.

Carrick has been at Old Trafford since 2006 and signed a new one-year contract at the club after celebrating his testimonial at the end of last season. He was also named club captain in the summer following the departure of Wayne Rooney.

Elsewhere in Manchester, it was revealed on Friday that City youngster Sinan Bytyqi has been forced to retire from the game at the age of 22 with a heart condition.

The Kosovan will now take up a role as a scout at the Etihad Stadium.
