As Manchester United look to rebuild, it has emerged that head coach Rúben Amorim views Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha as a brilliant potential addition to his engine room.

The 2024–25 season was one of United’s worst in recent memory, and expectations are now high among fans as the new campaign approaches.

With that in mind, INEOS are expected to back Amorim with quality signings to lay the foundation for long-term success.

Attacking reinforcements are already being prioritised. Matheus Cunha has joined, Bryan Mbeumo is close to finalising a move from Brentford, and behind the scenes, signs suggest that a striker is also being lined up.

Strengthening the attack has been the priority; once that is done, attention is expected to turn to other areas of the pitch.

While these attacking signings could significantly dent United’s transfer budget, anticipated sales (of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony) should raise extra funds.

According to The Athletic‘s Laurie Whitwell, Amorim also wants to bring in an athletic midfielder.

United tracking Nmecha

In that search for a midfield workhorse, it was always going to be difficult for United to overlook long-standing target Felix Nmecha.

The Dortmund midfielder is as athletic as they come, with Bundesliga.com likening him to the burly, box-to-box midfield operator Leon Goretzka.

Speaking to Caught Offside, Christian Falk confirmed that United’s interest in Nmecha remains very much alive.

While he goes on to hint at why the Premier League side are tempted to make a move for the player, he also makes it clear that the Bundesliga giants are determined to keep hold of him.

“Manchester United are interested in Felix Nmecha,” Falk confirmed.

“The international (market value €28 million) is drawing interest from the Premier League.

“He speaks English as a second language and knows Manchester from his youth spell at City.

“Dortmund are determined to keep him and have no plans to sell.”

Nmecha to United could undoubtedly end up being a tricky transfer for INEOS, but since when has any transfer been straightforward?

Nmecha shines at the Club World Cup

Jobe Bellingham may be stealing the spotlight during Dortmund’s Club World Cup run, but Nmecha’s rising influence has not gone unnoticed either.

Following his side’s 1-0 win over Ulsan Hyundai, the former Manchester City youngster was hailed as an unsung hero, with The Athletic noting: “He’s becoming a really dynamic midfielder, full of technical class and self-belief, and can be a real spectacle with the ball at his feet.”

If United choose to push ahead despite Dortmund’s reluctance, their desire would be easy to understand.

The German international may be just the player to bring the hunger and bite Amorim craves in the centre of the park.

Yes, Dortmund may insist he is not for sale, but a bid too tempting to refuse could change their mind.

Nmecha produced six goals and three assists across 39 appearances last season.

At this stage, he should be seen as a player with long-term potential rather than the finished article.

Should United land him, it would signal strong faith in Amorim and his backroom staff to nurture him and unlock his full potential.
