United got into big trouble when Bruno Fernandes was sent off for a poor challenge on James Maddison.

Ten Hag rang changes to settle his side down but they conceded just two minutes after the restart.

Dejan Kulusevski’s acrobatic finish ensured a cushion for Spurs.

United had a 15-minute spell during which they created chances but Solanke’s third goal ended their impossible pursuit of making a comeback.

Let’s get into the player ratings.

Player Ratings

Andre Onana – 7/10

Onana was the best player for United.

He made a fine save against Maddison and denied Timo Werner twice in 1v1 contests. Without him between the sticks, Spurs could have fired seven goals.

Noussair Mazraoui – 5/10

The right-back should have fouled Mickey van de Ven who ran through the United’s defence to earn the assist.

He made a brilliant clearance to deny an easy tap-in opportunity for Werner.

Matthijs de Ligt – 3/10

He tried to close down Van de Ven but failed to obstruct his cross. His passing was abysmal and showed a lack of composure required in this game.

Lisandro Martinez – 5/10

The Argentine showed more spirit with the captain’s armband than Bruno Fernandes.

He was a key player when United tried to show some fight in the second half.

Diogo Dalot – 2/10

A terrible performance from the Portuguese international. He was caught out of position for the first goal, allowing Johnson to score.

He kept making sloppy mistakes and would have been replaced if Ten Hag had a left-back in the ranks.

Manuel Ugarte – 3/10

It was a poor display from the former PSG midfielder. Tottenham dominated the midfield and Ugarte failed to show any game awareness.

Kobbie Mainoo – 5/10

The youngster was not as poor as his teammates but was forced off injured before the break.

Bruno Fernandes – 2/10

Fernandes’s struggles continued following disappointing performances against Crystal Palace and FC Twente.

He attempted a late challenge at James Maddison and got his marching orders. It was another big game where he failed to show the maturity of being a captain.

Alejandro Garnacho – 5/10

The youngster was unlucky to see his first-time strike hit the post in the first half.

He kept fighting after the break against Spurs to create chances. Almost every United attack came through him.

Joshua Zirkzee – 3/10

The striker failed to beat Vicario after receiving a good pass from Mainoo.

Marcus Rashford – 4/10

Rashford gave the ball away for the first goal but was their most influential attacking player before the break.

His effectiveness decreased when he moved to the central position after Fernandes’ red card.

Substitutes

Mason Mount – 4/10

His first involvement was to earn an unnecessary yellow card when United were already a man down.

Like Mainoo, he was forced off due to an injury late in the game.

Casemiro – 6/10

The Brazilian international came close to scoring for United but his shot narrowly missed the target.

Christian Eriksen – 4/10

His set-piece deliveries were disappointing and failed to make an impact.

Rasmus Hojlund – 4/10

An almost invisible performance with no impact.

Amad Diallo – NA

Too late to rate.
