Manchester United on alert as Antonio Conte plans return to management

According to a tweet put out by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano (h/t The Sun), Antonio Conte is planning to return to management next season amidst Manchester United links.

The Italian boss has had a largely successful career at club level in Serie A as well as in the Premier League, while he has also excelled on the international level.

Conte first came to the limelight during his incredible time with Juventus when he started the Turin outfit’s near decade-long reign in the Serie A in 2011. Conte went on to win three Serie A titles with the Old Lady. The Italian boss followed this by leading his national team to a quarter-final in the 2016 European Championships.

After the tournament, he was named as the Chelsea boss and ran away with the Premier League title in his debut season in English football. The following year he also lifted the FA Cup. He later joined Inter Milan and won them their first Scudetto in 11 years in the last season, before leaving the club this summer.

Since then, the 52-year-old has been in high demand, with Premier League clubs on red alert. He was touted for a return to the English league earlier this summer with Tottenham, but talks broke down. It was then understood that Conte would be ready to take over the Manchester United job should Ole Gunnar Solskjaer leave the club.

The Norwegian boss recently signed a new contract at the club, keeping him there at least until 2024. However, since then his side have lost their opening Champions League game and have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup.

Although they are level on points atop the Premier League table, failure to pick up silverware this season might not go down well with the fans or the hierarchy, especially when the club signed marquee players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho & Raphael Varane.

Thus, while no immediate managerial decisions are expected to be taken at Old Trafford, next summer could be a different ball game.
