Early in the second half, a long pass forward was chested down by Sergio Agüero into the path of Raheem Sterling and the ball ricocheted off the England winger and into the net.
Sterling was clearly in an offside position and the linesman’s flag went straight up to disallow the goal.
But after a brief consultation with his assistant, referee Paul Tierney allowed the goal to stand.
See if you can understand why …
It seems that although Sterling was in an offside position when the ball was played to him by Agüero, the final touch before it bounced off the City star came from a Watford defender.
According to the laws of the game, this means he could in fact be considered onside and the goal was correctly allowed to stand.
But to say Twitter was divided by the incident would be an understatement …
Sterling quickly added two more goals to complete his hat-trick inside 13 second half minutes, but he will perhaps be especially thankful to the referee when claiming that match ball after the game.
