Rodri is back in the squad for Manchester City for their final home match of the season tonight, while Kevin De Bruyne is also set to bid an emotional farewell to the Etihad as he is set to leave the club come the end of the season.

The Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has been sidelined since September with a serious knee injury, but returned to training in April as he targets a key role in the Club World Cup, which begins in June.

He will not start, though, as City bid to claim the three points needed to all but secure Champions League football next season, but he makes the bench.

Mateo Kovacic makes a surprise return to the starting lineup after previously being considered a doubt, while Nathan Ake makes the bench for the first time since late February.

Their involvement had been in doubt. Guardiola was asked pre-match about whether the injured troop of Kovacic, Ake, John Stones and Oscar Bobb could feature on Tuesday, saying: “We’ll see. Some players are better. Rodri is even better day by day.”

De Bruyne is gearing up for his final home game as a City player, and Guardiola has handed him a start despite playing the full match as City lost to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Guardiola said pre-match: “Kevin wants us to win the game to qualify for the Champions League next season. This is what Kevin wants. I will pick the best team to win the game.

“Kevin will get what he deserves in the best moment for what he has done. What we have done would not be possible without Kevin.”

Elsewhere, Savinho and Jeremy Doku drop out of the squad, while Rico Lewis returns to the bench after being omitted from the matchday squad at Wembley.

Manchester City starting XI: Ederson; Gvardiol, Akanji, Dias, Nunes; Kovacic, Gundogan; Bernardo, De Bruyne, Marmoush; Haaland

Subs: Ake, Foden, Rodri, Doku, Nico, O’Reilly, Ortega, Bobb, Grealish
