According to reports, Manchester City have reached a ‘verbal agreement’ with Ligue Un side Rennes and they are now set to sign Jeremy Doku.

The Premier League champions have been in the market for a new winger in recent weeks as they are looking to replace Riyad Mahrez after the Algeria international completed his move to the Saudi Pro League.

Pep Guardiola’s side were heavily linked with ex-Chelsea target Michael Olise before he committed his future to Crystal Palace but they have turned their attention to Doku, who has been monitored by Liverpool over the past few years.

The 21-year-old grabbed six goals and two assists in 29 Ligue Un outings for Rennes last season as his best performances have come when playing internationally for Belgium.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed on Monday afternoon that a “verbal agreement is in place” between Man City and Rennes after their “new bid” worth €60m was deemed to be acceptable.

The report adds: “Medical tests are being scheduled later this week, personal terms agreed on a long-term deal.

“The fee will be close to €60m package but it will include very favourable payment terms for City.

“Installments will make the deal feasible. The negotiation started on August 1 as City decided to go for Doku after tracking him for a long time.”

Sky Sports later added that “City have agreed a €65m deal to sign Rennes winger Doku”. They continued.

“The Belgian winger has already scored in his first two games for Rennes this season and scored six last term in Ligue 1.

“Man City are looking for a winger to replace Riyad Mahrez, who left for Saudi Arabia.”

Ex-Premier League and Belgium star Philippe Albert thinks Doku could be a “real nuisance in England”.

“He has incredible qualities that we discovered at Anderlecht,” Albert told RTBF.

“I don’t think the step [to Manchester City] is too high. He has the qualities to impose himself in the Premier League, or any other league in the world.

“If he is physically at 100 per cent, he will make his mark and scare the opponents. He’s a bit like Eden Hazard at the beginning of his career, with double and triple gears that can really hurt [defenders].”

Albert added: “In England, he would be a real nuisance.

“He can play on either flank, but I still believe that a player has to play on his favoured foot. So I would put him on the right. The role of a winger is also to feed the striker.”
