Newcastle United tried really hard to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi last summer.

The Magpies lodged several bids for the England international but ultimately failed to persuade Palace to let their prized asset leave.

Newcastle could reignite their interest in Guehi in the January transfer window but it looks unlikely they will succeed in securing a deal for him.

It is quite clear manager Eddie Howe needs to add a top-quality defender to help boost the club’s chances for a place in Europe next season.

Howe must seal a transfer blinder with a move for Liverpool star Joe Gomez.

The Tyneside club were linked with Gomez last summer, but a move didn’t materialise.

The 27-year-old still has a lot to offer at the top level of football.

The England international joined Liverpool in 2015 and has gone on to make over 230 senior appearances.

During his time in Merseyside, he has won the Premier League and Champions League.

Gomez, who has been hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Arne Slot, mainly plays in central defence but he can also operate in either full-back position.

He is contracted with the Reds until 2027, but a good offer could tempt them to sell the highly-rated centre-back.

Gomez has been struggling for regular minutes at Anfield this season, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate forging a strong partnership in defence.

He has featured in three Premier League matches so far, but all three have come off the bench.

Gomez is a quality defender, and he is unlikely to be content with his current situation.
