City suffer first EFL Cup defeat since 2016

There will be a new name of the EFL Cup trophy this year as Manchester City were knocked out on penalties against West Ham United.

The teams couldn’t be separated in normal time leading to a penalty shootout where Phil Foden was the only player to miss his spot-kick.

Saïd Benrahma dispatched from 12 yards for David Moyes’ side to send West Ham through and inflict a first defeat on City in this competition since 2016.

Origi wonder goal helps Reds progress

Scorers: Minamino 62′, Origi 84′.

A much-changed Liverpool survived a few scares against Championship side Preston North End before sealing their progress to the quarter-finals.

Adrián pulled off a wonderful save to deny Sean Maguire before Neco Williams denied Brad Potts’ off the line as the hosts looked capable of pulling off a shock.

But Jürgen Klopp’s men produced the moments of quality to decide the game with Williams turning his marker inside-out before crossing for Takumi Minamino to poke home.

Williams was involved again for the second, as his deflected shot landed in the path of Divock Origi, who improvised to heel-volley the ball into the back of the net to round off the tie.

Moura the supersub for Spurs

Scorers: Moura 68′.

Lucas Moura came off the bench to score the winner for Tottenham as Nuno Espírito Santo’s side booked their place in the last-eight.

The Brazilian was on hand to head home at the far post in the 68th minute after Emerson Royal produced some good work before crossing to find his teammate unmarked.

Foxes need penalties to eventually see off Seagulls

Scorers: Barnes 6′, Lookman 45+5; Webster 45+3, Mwepu 71′.

Brighton twice came from behind but were eventually knocked out on penalties by Leicester City.

Harvey Barnes fired Leicester in front after six minutes, pouncing on to a mix-up in the Brighton defence before firing into the corner from just inside the box.

There was a manic end to the first half as the Seagulls looked to have levelled proceedings going into the break through Adam Webster – who poked home after the hosts failed to clear from a corner.

But there was still time in first half stoppage time for the Foxes to restore their lead as Ademola Lookman caught the Brighton defence asleep again and stole the ball before running through to slide it past Jason Steele.

Graham Potter’s side found the resilience to pull level again deep into the second when Enock Mwepu headed home Marc Cucurella’s cross.

The game went to penalties with Neal Maupay hitting the bar for Brighton before Danny Ward’s save from Mwepu sealed the win for Brendan Rodgers’ men

Beez buzz into last eight

Scorers: Sawyers 57′; Canos 19′, Toney 40′.

Brentford, semi-finalists in last year’s competition, overcame a spirited Stoke City side to move into the last eight.

The Bees stormed ahead after 19 minutes after Ivan Toney found Sergi Canos from a corner for the Spaniard to drill the ball into the bottom corner.

Toney then went from creator to scorer to place the ball home from 12 yards out to double their lead.

Romaine Sawyers got one back against his former club, half-volleying in from the edge of the area after Brentford had only half-cleared a corner but Thomas Frank’s side held on to continue their love affair with the EFL Cup.
