A recent report from Diario SPORT has offered an update on Frenkie de Jong’s situation at Barcelona. The report suggests that Manchester City have entered the race to sign him.

The midfielder has become one of the most sought-after assets in the market, with many expecting Barça to sanction his sale at the end of the season.

The sale of de Jong, after all, could be Barcelona’s best avenue for generating funds that will go a long way in cutting back their economic losses and helping the club sign top target Robert Lewandowski.

However, the report suggests Barcelona have no intention to sell Frenkie for anything less than the €100 million mark as they rate the player highly.

Paris Saint-Germain and the two Manchester clubs have largely shown the desire to snap up the Dutchman in the coming summer, with United, in particular, keen on securing his services at the end of the season.

Their new coach Erik ten Hag is desperate to reunite with de Jong at Old Trafford next season, with the Red Devils even willing to fork out €85 million including variables.

Barcelona have shown no suggestions to consider that offer just yet even though their €100 million price tag is believed to be negotiable, to a certain degree.

Another suitor in the form of PSG might be ruled out of the chase as de Jong had rejected the Parisian juggernaut in the past. The midfielder has firmly stated that he values footballing projects over money.

It leaves Manchester City as the only other suitor for the former Ajax starlet. Fresh from signing prized attacker Erling Haaland, the Citizens are currently looking for a long-term replacement for Fernandinho, with de Jong ideally fitting the bill.

Although the English champions are not willing to match Man United’s €85 million offer, they are open to adding one of their stars as a makeweight and one would expect Pep Guardiola to offer someone like Gabriel Jesus as a sacrifice.

Barcelona, though, favour a cash deal for the sale of Frenkie de Jong, even though Xavi has recently entertained the possibility of signing Bernardo Silva as a direct replacement for the Dutchman.
