Manchester City pulverised Manchester United in a stunning 6-3 triumph on Sunday afternoon.

In a barnstorming display from the champions that could easily have seen them romp their way to seven, eight or nine goals, one of the most remarkable facts was that the Citizens only actually had two goalscorers along the way.

That’s because Phil Foden and Erling Haaland both helped themselves to hat-tricks in just the third time in Premier League history that two players from the same side have notched trebles in the same game.

Foden and Haaland score hat-tricks vs Man Utd

The City duo now join Jermaine Pennant and Robert Pires routing Southampton in 2003 as well as Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy scoring hat-tricks against the same opponents 16 years later in the exclusive club.

But you’ll excuse us for thinking that the Citizen’s double hat-trick was the sweetest of all with Foden and Haaland’s trebles glinting at the sharpest point of Pep Guardiola’s cutting edge football.

Erling Haaland was born in which city?

Manchester Leeds Oslo London

United couldn’t help but look on in shock as the two 22-year-old’s added to their 2022 tallies (is that enough twos for you?) to propel the hosts within touching distance of the Premier League summit.

Plus, such was the unique circumstances of the City duo having scored a hat-trick each that there was some amusing scenes at full-time epitomising the pair’s long-running bromance.

From each being photographed in City gear during their childhood to once touching based after a Champions League clash between the Citizens and Borussia Dortmund, the two same-aged youngsters clearly get along with one another.

Foden and Haaland’s post-match bromance

And that led to a couple of moments after the game just as heartwarming as they were funny where Foden and Haaland had to share both the match ball and the ‘Player of the Match’ prize.

Let’s start with the former, because true to protocol, Haaland got his hands on the ball for scoring a hat-trick by going over to the match officials, nursing it under his arm as he showed his respects to a number of the United players.

But Ilkay Gundogan was keen to ensure that Foden also got some loving with the ball as he slipped it out of Haaland’s grasp and threw it to the young Englishman as the City players soaked up the atmosphere.

However, the bromance vibes didn’t end there because Sky Sports were keen to get their money’s worth by putting both City stars in front of Geoff Shreeves’ microphone for a post-match interview.

And not only did they both joke about how the match ball situation would be resolved, duly coming in for a little snuggle, but it was also revealed that they had both been named as MOTM.

To that, Haaland generously passed on the trophy to Foden, who joked that they should cut the plaque in half, making for another charming moment summing up the positive energy at the Etihad right now.

It can’t be easy sharing both the match ball and ‘Player of the Match’ award, can it lads?

Haaland and Foden both ended up with match balls

Nevertheless, just as Haaland had joked in his interview, it looks as though they both managed to get their hands on a ball with City’s star striker taking to Instagram with a photo of himself and his fellow hat-trick scorer.

Oh to be a City player, huh?
