Mamelodi Sundowns drop points in the opening match of the 2025-26 PSI season
The defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns were forced to share points with Chippa United in a tightly contested 1-1 draw at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Arthur Sales put Masandawana ahead in the 32nd minute before Khaya Mfecane's second-half equalizer denied the visitors an opening day victory.
New signing Fawaaz Basadien made his debut at right wing-back as coach Rulani Mokwena experimented with his lineup, while star striker Peter Shalulile watched from the bench amid transfer speculation. Chippa's new midfield duo Sammy Seabi and Goodman Mosele immediately impressed, helping their team weather Sundowns' early pressure before finding their footing in the match.
The Brazilians dominated possession but struggled to convert chances, with Rayners squandering a golden opportunity in the 21st minute before Sales finally broke through with a well-worked goal assisted by Tashreeq Matthews. However, Chippa's resilient defense and Mfecane's clinical finish ensured the hosts earned a hard-fought point against the league favorites.
