RCD Mallorca on Tuesday night beat out stiff competition on their way to an altogether impressive feat.

This, of course, comes fresh off what marked a historic outing for Los Bermellones.

Fresh off an important point in the club’s ongoing battle against relegation from La Liga at the weekend, Javier Aguirre’s troops turned their attentions back towards an unlikely pursuit of silverware.

Making the trip to Anoeta, Mallorca went toe-to-toe with Real Sociedad for the third time this month, on this occasion in the 2nd leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final tie between the clubs.

The clash was positioned on a knife edge ahead of kick-off, following a goalless stalemate at Son Moix on February 6th.

And, with a full 120 minutes on the clock on Tuesday, the sides, still, could not be separated.

As much came after Giovanni González’s opener was cancelled out by returning Real Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal, en route to a 1-1 extra-time result.

And so, the matchup was sent to penalties, with Mallorca, when all was said and done, having kept their cool to book a place in the Copa del Rey finale.

This, in addition, means that Aguirre and his men have sealed a place in the next edition of the Spanish Super Cup.

In fact, the Bermellones are the first club to manage as much.

Just who, though, could yet join them in the tournament?

The Spanish Super Cup is currently contested by four teams, namely the winners and runners-up of the Copa del Rey, as well as the winners and runners-up in La Liga.

As a result, Mallorca are guaranteed to be joined by one of Atlético Madrid and Athletic Club at the Supercopa.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, look a near certainty to follow suit, with one of Girona or Barcelona the likeliest candidates to round out the quartet of clubs.
