Real Madrid star Toni Kroos this weekend made use of the opportunity to aim a couple of underhanded digs at Barcelona.

As much, of course, comes fresh off Real wrestling back Spanish football supremacy from their arch rivals.

After Los Blancos’ 3-0 downing of Cádiz last weekend was swiftly followed by Barcelona slipping to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Girona, Carlo Ancelotti’s troops were officially crowned as La Liga champions for 2023/24.

Real Madrid’s stars, for their part, remained behind at the Santiago Bernabéu on the back of their win over Cádiz, to ensure that they were together in the case of Barcelona falling in the Catalan Derby.

And, this weekend, the aforementioned Toni Kroos provided an insight into precisely what unfolded in Spain’s capital.

As part of the latest episode of the ‘Einfach mal luppen’ podcast, the German international confirmed that he and his teammates watched on as Barca surrendered a first-half advantage at the Estadi Montilivi:

“We won our game and, when Barcelona went 2-1 up, I was going to go home, but everyone told me to stay. Five minutes later they lost 4-2. We were all eating hot dogs. Not leaving was a good decision.”

From here, Kroos could not help but aim something of a dig at Xavi’s men, in suggesting that they were completely outplayed by Girona:

“It was crazy because Girona could have won that game 7-2. We celebrated, not a lot, but we celebrated.”

The 34-year-old then went on to add that Real Madrid were ‘so far clear’ of all of the competition in Spain this season, before confirming that the combination of Los Merengues’ title being made official, and Barcelona being put to the sword, made last weekend’s experience ‘doubly good’:

“It is clear that, if I had been able to paint it, I would have preferred not to experience it in front of a TV. But it doesn’t matter, combining it with a defeat for Barcelona was doubly good. Hence, we accepted it as it happened.”
