A hat-trick off the bench from Alonso MartĂnez saw NYCFC thump San Jose on Friday to kick the matchday off, seeing the Pigeons inch ever closer to the top of the Eastern Conference.

Meanwhile, the leaders in the East, Inter Miami, stumbled once again as they needed a late comeback to draw 3-3 at home to St. Louis City.

Real Salt Lake continued to tear up the West, thrashing Austin FC by a staggering 5-1 scoreline as they remain top of the conference.

Atlanta United dropped points once again, losing at home to Charlotte, a result which has lead to the sacking of Gonzalo Pineda on Monday morning.

Finally, in the final stunning result of the weekend, strugglers Chicago Fire pulled off an upset against Western Conference contenders LA Galaxy in the Windy City.

LAFC just keep on ticking. Steve Cherundolo’s side have won five straight games and have not conceded a goal in any of them.

The 1-0 win over FC Dallas on Saturday ensured that if the Black and Gold win their game in hand over Western Conference leaders Real Salt Lake, they will pull level with them on points at the top.

The Galaxy are perhaps one of the most watchable teams in the league this season, but they must be a maddening bunch for the Carson faithful.

After a week in which the club extended the contract of star-man Riqui Puig and entered advanced negotiations with Borussia Dortmund legend Marco Reus, the Galaxy dropped one of their worst performances of the campaign, losing away from home to a Chicago fire team that has only won three games all year.

The Galaxy remain in the top-four of the Western Conference, but with some consistency, they could be far higher than that.
