Sheffield Wednesday are working on establishing a compromise that would see Danny Rohl leave the club before the start of the upcoming season.
The sought-after German coach has made his wishes clear, intending to lead a club at a higher level with no shortage of potential suitors in England and in mainland Europe.
Rohl had a stellar first season at Hillsborough, leading the Owls to safety with an unlikely rescue job secured on the final day of the Sky Bet Championship season.
His second campaign steadied the ship and led Wednesday to a respectable mid-table finish, while results tailed off towards the end of the term with disagreements with owner Dejphon Chansiri surfacing.
The 12th-placed finished managed in 2024/25 was level with their 2018/19 result, marking a sharp improvement from the drop into the third tier and dangerous flirting with relegation after returning to the Championship in the years that have followed.
Now, it has been revealed by an exclusive Sheffield Star report that Rohl is in discussions to bring an end to his time in charge of the Steel City club.
Journalists Joe Crann and Alex Miller noted that negotiations were underway to find the compromise that would allow Rohl to wriggle free of his current contract.
And, while they confirmed nothing had yet been agreed, all sides have come to the consensus that finding a solution to the problem was better than letting it drag into the start of the 2025/26 campaign.
The Sheffield Star reported that Rohl will not be taking pre-season training at Wednesday, with him having already managed his final game for the blue side of Sheffield. That is unless a drastic change of tone comes.
The Owls are yet to agree the finer details of Rohl’s exit plan, with the differences between sacking, resignation, or mutual agreement, potentially impacting the amount of compensation the club can receive if the German takes up a position elsewhere.
That has been believed to be the sticking point for Rohl’s move, with the large compensation fee a new employer would have to pay seemingly causing some to backtrack from seeking the 36-year-old’s signature.
Because the former Germany national team assistant has a lengthy contract at Hillsborough, the compensation Wednesday would be owed if another club came in for Rohl is believed to be too much for some of the otherwise interested parties.
All sides of the complicated issues are now seeking a compromise, while rumours over the ownership at the Owls are also swirling.
Now former Crystal Palace shareholder John Textor’s hat has been thrown into the ring, as Wednesday face transfer restrictions and a strict embargo after Chansiri failed to pay staff their wages on time.
