According to L’Équipe, Sonia Bompastor is very close to being named the next head coach of Chelsea, with an agreement suspected to have already been signed with the club.
Bompastor has been linked with the club ever since current Chelsea manager, Emma Hayes, announced that she would be leaving the team at the end of the season to become the next head coach of the USWNT.
Bompastor is a highly-rated figure in French football and remains the only person to have won the Women’s Champions League as a player and a coach. The French Federation had even been interested in appointing her the successor to Hervé Renard after the Olympics but had been warned off by her interest in the London club.
Despite the reports, both Bompastor and Lyon continue to deny the gathering stories, in part because an announcement would disrupt the team in the final stretch of the season with the league and the Champions League still to play for, while the possibility that Lyon and Chelsea could meet in a European final must also be taken into consideration.
