L’Équipe are reporting that Gennaro Gattuso’s move to Olympique Lyonnais has begun to stall in recent hours. Gattuso is the overwhelming favourite to take over from Laurent Blanc, who parted ways with Lyon by mutual consent on Monday.
He leaves the side bottom of Ligue 1 with just one point from the opening four games of the season. However, there are now doubts about his touted replacement, although the reasons for this doubt remain obscure.
Almost everything was agreed between Gattuso and Lyon. The Italian manager had even constructed his backroom staff, however, the momentum bringing him to the Groupama Stadium has dissipated. L’Équipe hypothesises that either John Textor doesn’t want to bow to the pressure of Jorge Mendes, the agent who is so determined to place one of his clients in the hot seat at Lyon or the American owner has been unsettled by the internal and external opposition to Gattuso’s appointment.
Gattuso, for now, is essentially in a waiting room whilst Textor continues to search for his new manager. The American owner doesn’t have much time, however. L’Équipe previously reported that he wanted a new manager in place before Sunday’s match against Le Havre, and if that is to be the case, Lyon will have to close in on a new target, or validate Gattuso’s appointment.
