An impressive Olympique Lyonnais side beat Barcelona 3-1 on Saturday to win the 2021/22 UEFA Womenâs Champions League title.
Scorers: Henry 6â˛, Hegerberg 23â˛, Macario 33â˛; Putellas 41â˛
The stage was set in Turin as reigning champions Barcelona took on serial winners Olympique Lyonnais and this mouth-watering match-up certainly lived up to the hype.
Lyon knocked on the door right from kick-off and the pressure seemingly (and somewhat surprisingly) cracked the Spanish side with ease.
A long-range stunner from Amandine Henry (which was no match for Sandra PaĂąos) broke the deadlock after six minutes before goals from all-time leading goalscorer Ada Hegerbeg and Catarina Macario made it 3-0.
Following that uncharacteristic half an hour, however, Ballon dâOr winner Alexia Putellas pulled a goal back for Barcelona which signaled the Spanish side wasnât letting the match get away that easily.
So coming out into the second half Barcelona were much more composed than they were earlier and it was Lyonâs turn to sit back and absorb the pressure which set up a nervy 45 minutes.
Asisat Oshioala added a spark off the bench almost finding the net twice and Patricia Guijarroâs attempted chip hit the crossbar much to Lyonâs relief. Goalkeeper Christiane Endler also stepped up on a few occasions to keep the scoreline down as well.
Eventually, as time went on, the Blaugrana couldnât find a way to pull off the comeback and Lyonâs statement first-half performance earned them an eighth Champions League title in 11 seasons.
