Lyon centre-back Dejan Lovren (33) has announced his international retirement on Twitter. Lovren played 78 times for the Croatian national team, scoring five goals in total. The former Southampton and Liverpool man was a mainstay and an all-important member of the Zlatko Dalić-led sides that finished runners-up of the 2018 World Cup in Russia and third of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. After the World Cup, Lovren returned to France to re-join Lyon on a two-and-a-half year contract, almost ten years after he had first left the club, with whom he won the Coupe de France in 2012. After his first stint with Les Gones, he crossed the Channel to play Premier League football with Southampton and Liverpool. .He won the Champions League and the Premier League with Jürgen Klopp’s Reds.

Lovren’s retirement is a bit curious given the timing. Indeed, Croatia will be competing next June for their first ever international trophy as they qualified for theNations League Final Four. Croatia will face Netherlands on June 14. The winner of this semifinal will face either Spain or Italy in the Nations League final, which will be held in Rotterdam.
