Spurs had Yves Bissouma sent off on the stroke of half-time but Micky Van de Ven scored the winner in the second half.

The result sends Spurs above Manchester City ahead of their game at Arsenal on Sunday.

Spurs dominated the first half-half but wasted a host of golden chances.

Richarlison was guilty an incredible miss inside three minutes and he then spurned another good opportunity before Pedro Porro missed the target when he was clean through.

Heung-min Son shot straight at Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski when he should have done better and Kaminski then made a brilliant one-handed save to deny Dejan Kulusevski.

Luton had the ball in the net but the goal was immediately ruled out for a clear push from Elijah Adebayo on Cristian Romero.

Spurs were then reduced to 10 men after a moment of madness from Bissouma right on the stroke of half-time.

Already on a yellow card, Bissouma was shown a red card after an obvious dive on the edge of the Luton box.

Luton missed a huge chance at the start of the second half when Chiedozie Ogbene put the ball on a plate for Adebayo at the back post but he somehow fluffed an effort wide.

But Spurs went ahead on 52 minutes. James Maddison did brilliantly from a short corner and cut the ball back for Van de Ven to turn home his first goal for Spurs.
