Luke Shaw played the full 90 minutes in England‘s 3-3 draw with Germany at Wembley, their final preparatory game for the Qatar World Cup.

After a dull UEFA Nations League encounter against Italy last week, which saw them beaten 1-0, the Three Lions were part of an international classic in London.

Germany raced into a 2-0 lead at the start of the second half courtesy of a successful penalty by Ilkay Gundogan and a sublime long-range strike from Kai Havertz.

But England’s response to going two goals down was even more impressive than Havertz’s effort.

It was Shaw who dragged the Three Lions back into the game in the 72nd minute of proceedings with his third goal on international duty.

Second half substitutes Bukayo Saka and Mason Mount then produced a lethal combination to make it 2-2 on the night, the former assisting the latter.

England captain Harry Kane completed the lightning-quick comeback with an emphatic penalty, before Havertz took advantage of a dreadful error by Nick Pope to finish off the scoring at Wembley.

Shaw was one of England’s best players vs Germany

Shaw, who’s struggled for game time at Manchester United of late, was reinstated to Southgate’s XI for the match at the expense of Saka – and he performed pretty well overall.

It’s clear that he is far more comfortable operating in a left-wing back role, rather than on the left of a back four.

Shaw was a constant threat down the flank and in the first half, the former Southampton man played a pass worthy of Manchester City maestro Kevin De Bruyne.

The full-back collected the ball near the halfway line after some excellent play from England and then managed to put Raheem Sterling through on goal with a piece of magic.

Shaw’s pass was weighted to perfection and it’s a real shame Sterling was unable to finish off the chance.

The Chelsea forward saw his left-footed shot superbly saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who got down low to his right in a flash.

Ter Stegen’s fingertips robbed Shaw of one of the best assists seen anywhere in 2022, which is a shame if you’re either an England or United fan.

Shaw will now return to Manchester and attempt to regain his place in the Red Devils’ starting XI.

Erik ten Hag has favoured Tyrell Malacia in recent weeks and the Dutch defender will almost certainly feature from the off against City on Sunday afternoon.

Can Shaw force his way back into the manager’s plans before the World Cup? In football, you can never rule anything out.
