Romelu Lukaku failed to convert only the second Serie A penalty of his career, the seventh in all competition, when denied by Inter-owned Filip Stankovic in Napoli-Venezia.

The centre-forward stepped up after the Jay Idzes handling offence and hit a fairly powerful spot-kick, but Stankovic picked the right side and was able to make the save.

This damaged Lukaku’s otherwise almost impeccable record from the spot, having previously converted 38 of the total 44 penalties in his playing career.

That includes 15 in Serie A, only failing to beat Wladimiro Falcone when Roma defeated Lecce 2-1 in November 2023.

This time he was denied by 22-year-old Filip Stankovic, the son of former Inter and Lazio hero Dejan Stankovic.

A product of the Inter youth academy, the goalkeeper is on loan at Venezia with an option to buy for €2m plus 50 per cent of the sell-on fee.

Lukaku had only failed to score six times with penalties in his club career, once for Manchester United, twice at Everton, once at West Bromwich Albion and the first for RSC Anderlecht in July 2011.
