Real Madrid veteran Luka Modric has looked as if he is on his way out of the club for much of the season, but he is as close as he has ever been to renewing. The decision is in Real Madrid’s hands at this point.

The 38-year-old’s agents met with the club this week to discuss his future, and Diario AS say that Modric has offered to make things easier for Los Blancos. He is now thinking about finishing his career at the Santiago Bernabeu, and has accepted his secondary role this season, and would again next year.

Modric would have been one of the highest earners at the club next season, a motive for Real Madrid to end their relationship, but has also offered to take a pay cut in order to remain at the club. They listened to the proposal, and told Modric’s agents that they would come to a decision shortly.

Earlier this week it had been reported that Real Madrid would decline to offer him a new deal, feeling it was time to move on from the Croatian and give a chance to the players coming through. However he has the backing of Carlo Ancelotti and his staff, and his latest proposal may persuade Los Blancos to change their minds and keep the beloved Modric on. That said, Real Madrid have not been known for their sentimentality in contract decisions in recent years.
