Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modrić has revealed how José Mourinho nearly reduced Cristiano Ronaldo to tears during his time in charge of the club.

Ronaldo and Mourinho combined to devastating effect in 2011/12 when Madrid beat rivals Barcelona to the LaLiga title – earning 100 points in the process.

But things began to collapse the following season when Modrić joined and one ill-tempered Copa del Rey match sticks in his memory.

“I was surprised by Mourinho’s reaction,” Modrić wrote in his biography. “We were winning 2-0 in the Copa del Rey.

“Ronaldo did not chase the rivals on his throw-in and José was furious with Cristiano. The two fought for a long time on the field.

“After returning to the locker room at half-time, I saw Ronaldo desperate, almost on the verge of tears.

“He said, ‘I do my best and he continues to criticise me.’

“They became so hot that only the intervention of the team-mates avoided a real fight between them.”

Mourinho spent three seasons at Real Madrid, winning one LaLiga and one Copa del Rey title.
