Despite their recent struggles domestically, Club Brugge can take full control of their European Conference League destiny with a win against Lugano on Thursday evening. The sides are currently level on points, with Lugano top only on goals scored. Last time out, Club Brugge overcame Norwegian side FK Bodø/Glimt with a 1-0 win, following on from their 1-1 opening day draw to Turkish side Beşiktaş.
Lugano drew 0-0 with Bodø/Glimt before a shock win in Turkey. The side were 2-0 down from a Vincent Aboubakar brace with 10 minutes to go, before three goals in the last 10 minutes saw them win 3-2. Lugano have had an indifferent start to the Swiss season, with five wins and five losses from their opening 10 games. While they have scored an impressive 19 goals, they have also conceded 17.
Club will be hopeful that if they can get a 2-0 lead like Beşiktaş that they don’t let Lugano back into the game. Club are on a poor run domestically, with Ronny Deila’s side without a league win five games. Over the weekend they lost 1-0 to bottom side Kortrijk. Pressure is starting to be applied to Deila after the poor run of form. Winning in Lugano will certainly help ease some of that pressure.
