Brighton & Hove Albion kick-off the new Barclays Women’s Super League season with a fixture against Everton at Walton Hall Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Sussex club have made 11 summer signings as head coach Melissa Phillips has rebuilt the squad during the close season. As a result, hopes are high for a much-improved season following a difficult campaign in 2022/2023.

One of Brighton & Hove Albion’s most eye-catching signings is former UEFA Women’s Champions League-winning midfielder Vicky Losada. The Spaniard has been named as club captain, a role that she also held whilst at former club FC Barcalona. When speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s fixture at Everton, the player said that being given the Brighton & Hove Albion captain’s armband was a shock.

“I wasn’t expecting to be the captain but I have been in that role for so many years,” Losada said. “Coming here, my role was never going to change regardless of whether I was wearing the armband or not. I want to help the team, especially the young players that are full of talent.

“You need something else to play at the top level and we’re building that, we know it is a process. We have to focus on performances and then making sure that we do our best every day.”

Despite edging towards the latter years of her career, Losada says that she’s more determined than ever to make a huge impact both on and off the pitch.

She said “It’s my season number 17, so my experience is massive. I want to keep enjoying the individual side, I want to keep enjoying football and then also, I want to help the team. I want to help the (young) talents in this team.

“The team comes first as it is the most important. I think the values of this group are about creating a family. I think we have high levels of characters, personality, leaders and we are excited about that. I want to focus on performance.”

After previously representing Arsenal and Manchester City in the Barclays Women’s Super League, Losada said that she always planned on coming back to England to test herself again.

“I think I’m a player with a lot of experience,” the midfielder said. “I’m not scared to say that my last three years, I haven’t been lucky with injuries. I had some experience in Italy and I just wanted to come back here as I think the WSL is the best league.

“After pre-season. I’m really excited to start on Sunday. “

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Everton kicks-off at 1pm on Sunday afternoon.
