The spotlight this summer has largely focused on Liverpool’s outlay, but sales will inevitably shape the final picture of the transfer window. As August draws nearer, the narrative is beginning to shift. With Luis Diaz now edging closer to a move away from Anfield, the landscape around Arne Slot’s squad could alter significantly.

According to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, Bayern Munich are closing in on a deal to sign Diaz. “Luis Diaz is getting closer to Bayern Munich from Liverpool for €75m. Agreement in principle with the winger for a contract until 2030,” he reported.
That valuation converts to around £65 million, which would represent a £16 million profit on the £49 million Liverpool paid Porto for the Colombia international in 2022. While that is short of the £80 million figure initially mentioned, it still sits within a range that reflects the player’s market value.
At 28, Diaz is entering the final peak years of his career. The club are yet to offer him a new contract, and his exclusion from the pre-season friendly against Stoke, played behind closed doors, suggests Liverpool are beginning to plan for life without him.

With Diaz not involved in that friendly, attention shifted to others in the squad. Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha were both deployed in wide roles, highlighting Liverpool’s future-focused strategy. For all the admiration Diaz commands, there is a growing sense that Liverpool would consider moving him on for the right offer.

Publicly, the club’s stance has been firm: Diaz is not for sale. Privately, however, movement behind the scenes is beginning to tell a different story.
While no final agreement has been signed, a sale in the region of £65 million would make financial sense for Liverpool. If the club are not planning to renew Diaz’s contract, capitalising now could prove smart business. That revenue could be reinvested in a younger, higher-ceiling profile.

Names like Real Madrid’s Rodrygo have been mentioned. Though more expensive, the potential return on that investment could be significant. Liverpool would effectively upgrade their left-sided attack for a modest net outlay.
For now, nothing is confirmed. But Diaz’s omission from recent pre-season involvement and the “agreement in principle” reported by Schira suggests progress is being made. Until more trusted domestic sources corroborate the deal, caution remains. But Liverpool may be preparing to allow Diaz the exit he wants, and at £65 million, few would argue with the value.
