Liverpool welcome FC Midtjylland to Anfield this Tuesday as The Reds look to continue their winning start to their Champions League campaign. It’s the first-ever meeting between the clubs and Jürgen Klopp’s side will be hoping for a convincing win on a night the boss is likely to use all five substitutions as he looks to spread the work-load throughout the squad.
On Saturday night, Liverpool had to dig deep for another come-from-behind victory after Sheffield United were gifted an early penalty from some dreadful VAR officiating. However, Jürgen Klopp’s ‘Mentality Monsters’ once again showed some serious mettle.
Liverpool are now second in the Premier League, with Everton top on goal difference. The Reds’ only league defeat so far was the 7-2 hammering they suffered at Aston Villa before the recent international break.
Last week, Liverpool started their Champions League journey with an impressive 1-0 win away to Dutch giants Ajax.
FC Midtjylland Form
Like Liverpool, FC Midtjylland are second in their domestic league, only behind on goal difference. They lost their opening league game, 2-0 at SønderjyskE, but then went seven games unbeaten in all competitions up to last week. They lost 4-0 at home to Serie A side Atalanta in their first Champions League group game last week.
FC Midtjylland returned to winning ways with an impressive 3-2 victory at Brøndby on Saturday.
Liverpool Team News
Liverpool are without Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain while Naby Keïta still remains a doubt.
Keïta will take a fitness test this week as well as Thiago Alcântara, Joël Matip and Kostas Tsimikas.
Thankfully, Alisson Becker returned to the starting lineup for the win over Sheffield United. He should start in goals again on Tuesday night.
Jürgen Klopp will probably aim to continue nurturing the new central-defensive partnership of Fabinho and Joe Gomez, giving them as much time playing together as possible.
In midfield, I think it will be a trio of Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Naby Keïta.
Klopp may well rotate the front three so Diogo Jota could start again after his match-winning goal on Saturday. He may replace Sadio Mané on the left, giving Liverpool’s number 10 a rest. Roberto Firmino could also be on the bench with Takumi Minamino starting in his place.
FC Midtjylland Team News
Oliver Olsen and Kristian Riis are both out injured for FC Midtjylland.
Head coach Brian Priske has favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation for most of this season and will most likely to stick to this familiar shape for the visit to Anfield.
Liverpool XI (4-3-3) – Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Gomez, Robertson; Henderson, Milner, Keïta; Salah, Minamino, Jota
FC Midtjylland XI (4-2-3-1) – Hansen; Andersson, Sviatchenko, Scholz, Paulinho; Onyeka, Cajuste; Dreyer, Sisto, Mabil; Kaba
WHEN THEY LAST MET
Liverpool and FC Midtjylland have never met before in any competitive fixture.
LIVERPOOL 4 – 0 FC MIDTJYLLAND
Liverpool are the clear favourites for this game and, even with a rotated starting lineup, The Reds should be able to make the gulf in class fairly evident over 90 minutes. Jürgen Klopp’s Reds to win by a fairly convincing margin.
