Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Everton chief Keith Wyness urged Liverpool to complete the signing of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. Wyness said,
“It would be a no-brainer for them (Liverpool) if they can get hold of him, and all the noises coming out of the Marc Guehi camp are that he’s keen to go.
“I think it’s a fantastic deal. I think Palace also recognise that I think he’s got just another year left on his contract. So they’d like to cash in as well. All parties could be very happy.
“If you remember the days when Virgil van Dijk came from Southampton, he was a big-money signing at the time, but he’s proven to be a superb buy. He’s done really well. I think he and Guehi, if they can keep fit, would be fantastic.
“I’m frightened to say it, but yes, it’s going to be a good signing for Liverpool and I think it will go through.”
Guehi had a solid campaign at the London club as he put in a string of solid performances for them on the defensive third of the pitch. The English talent played in 44 matches for the Eagles last season, netting three goals and securing a couple of assists in all competitions.
The 24-year-old was a reliable presence at the heart of Crystal Palace’s backline and deserves credit for making 61 tackles, 55 blocks and 28 interceptions in the Premier League. He was even excellent when distributing possession from inside his half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 83.5% in top-flight football (stats via fbref.com).

Guehi is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his team inside his half. He usually clears the danger when needed and can even play his way out from the back.
The English talent can also make some important last-ditch blocks for his side. He knows the Premier League well and won’t take any time to adapt to life at Liverpool.
Guehi would undoubtedly enhance the quality of Arne Slot’s defensive department. He is good enough to compete with Ibrahima Konate and Virgil Van Dijk for a regular first-team spot at the Merseyside club.
At 24, Guehi will only get better with each year. Therefore, he would be a great option for the Reds to consider in this summer transfer window.
