Liverpool transfers: 18-year-old could be FIRST multi-club project signing | OneFootball

Liverpool suspect they’ve found a talent in Sweden. The 18-year-old midfielder only made his senior debut in 2024.

Caughtoffside reports that Liverpool have been monitoring Malick Yalcouye of IFK Goteborg over the last season. They'll continue to do so, too, after seeing his first handful of senior games.

Yalcouye only made his senior debut in February, playing a cup game for Goteborg. He's since gone on to make seven league appearances, scoring once.

The teenager turned 18 back in November and apparently has several clubs looking at him. Liverpool are mentioned in the report, alongside Gent, Ajax and PSV Eindhoven.

Those three clubs have a real knack for finding gems in weaker leagues and Yalcouye may be another one. The Reds, however, will hope they've found a gem - and that they can get there first.

Liverpool look at Malick Yalcouye

Liverpool have done brilliantly to snap up young players over the last few years. We're gradually seeing more and more pop up in the senior side, proving the system is working.

Conor Bradley is perhaps the biggest 'win'. Liverpool found him in Northern Irish youth football and brought him over. Harvey Elliott was one they pushed hard for, along with other English youth prospects like Kaide Gordon and Bobby Clark.

Stefan Bajcetic is a fantastic example of finding a player abroad, though. He was the final youth signing before Brexit closed the door on foreign academy players.

Yalcouye isn't an academy player, however. He's now in senior football and Liverpool will be judging whether he can make it for the Reds anytime soon - that's the only way they club can sign him.

Any non-British player must be a first-team signing if they're to secure a work permit. Yalocuye will be difficult to sign, then, unless he can rapidly show he'd play for Liverpool's senior side.

However, the modern way of signing such a player is to use a multi-club system. That's certainly how Manchester City do it - and Liverpool are trying to get involved in that.

The idea is to sign the player for another club under the same umbrella, that way you have them on the books even if they're not quite good enough for the biggest club. City will sign Savio from Girona (though, technically Troyes) this summer on that idea.

And so if Liverpool are monitoring Yalcouye, it would likely be with the multi-club project in mind. He may well be the first such signing - though, there's an awful long way to go.
