Liverpool sign Canadian international midfielder Smith | OneFootball

Liverpool have completed the signing of Canadian international midfielder Olivia Smith from Portuguese club Sporting CP.

WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Reds this morning.

It is believed that Liverpool have paid an undisclosed fee to meet a release clause in Smith’s contract with Sporting CP and to secure her services this summer.

Smith has spent one season with Sporting CP in which she impressed with her performances week-on-week. The 19-year-old ended the campaign with the Liga BPI’s Young Player of the Season award while the league’s coaches and captains named her as their Player of the Season.

On the international stage, Smith already has 10 senior caps to her name. She has scored two goals and has provided two assists for her national team so far.

Smith has the potential to be a top talent and she will be hoping to now grow under Matt Beard’s guidance at Liverpool.

After joining The Reds, Smith said “Now that I’m finally here in the facility, I got to see a little bit of Liverpool. I absolutely love it and I’m super-excited.

“It’s definitely a prestigious club as a whole and also for my dad, it’s very important for him – this is the club he’s been watching and following since he was younger. It’s very cool to actually be a part of this thing and get this opportunity.

“I think it’s super-exciting because we have such a young team and [last] season they were amazing. I’m excited to be a part of a squad like this.”

Smith becomes Liverpool’s first signing of the summer transfer window.
