The report claims all six clubs have broken rule L9 in the Premier League rulebook as they failed to gain written approval from the league to join a new competition. Points deductions are not thought to be on the cards for any of the sides.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Liverpool can have no complaints in response to this news. The club, along with Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham, went against the best interests of the rest of the league to pursue their own goals and it is now coming back to haunt them. Whilst it is great that all six of the clubs decided to withdraw from the Super League plans, the chaos they caused by attempting to break away is seemingly enough to warrant substantial sanctions from the Premier League.

Although the report states that the fines will be substantial and enough to make an impact on the finances of each club, it is still difficult to gauge exactly what kind of figure Liverpool are likely to pay. The club have reportedly already felt the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and are on the verge of missing out on Champions League football for next season. This means that this fine from the Premier League could have influence Liverpool’s movements in the transfer market this summer, depending on how high the figure is.
