Slot has enjoyed considerable success at Feyenoord, winning the 2022/23 Eredivisie title, as well as the KNVB cup last season. In 2021/2022, he steered the Dutch outfit to the final of the UEFA Europa Conference League, where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.

The Dutchman’s protracted appointment marks the end of weeks of speculation concerning the prestigious role, with outgoing manager Jurgen Klopp having announced his intention to step down at the end of the season  back in January of this year. Other managers, including Sporting Lisbon’s highly rated Ruben Amorim, were considered, but it seems that Slot has become the frontrunner and it’s only a matter of time before the deal is finalised.

With a reputation as a shrewd tactician delivering high pressing, high energy football, Slot is a logical successor to Klopp, the only question being whether he can replicate his success in his homeland with a club of worldwide prestige and high expectations domestically and on the European stage.
