Liverpool have turned down the chance to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.

The proposed move would have seen defender Jarell Quansah move in the other direction as part of a swap deal.

However, talks broke down this week, according to the Daily Mail, who claim there is a small chance talks could be revived this weekend.

Liverpool are said to ‘admire’ Gordon, but their squad is already well stacked in wide areas. They are also not willing to part ways with Quansah, who is set to be a key player for the Reds in the years to come.

The report comes as Newcastle scramble to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) before 1 July. The club have to raise a reported £30m before that date or risk a points deduction next season.

The Magpies have been frustrated in their attempts to offload players to garner funds. Yankuba Minteh has been heavily linked with Brighton, Everton, Borussia Dortmund and Lyon, but time is running out to broker a deal.

Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron could also leave St James’ Park this summer. Both players have attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League, while Wilson reportedly has offers from the Premier League and MLS.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are attempting to complete a separate swap deal this week after opening talks with Nottingham Forest.

Eddie Howe is looking to sign Anthony Elanga while sending youngster Elliot Anderson to the City Ground, according to Sky Sports.

As Anderson is an academy product at Newcastle, his sale would generate pure profit and be a huge boost to the club’s accounts with regards to PSR.
