Talks have taken place for Anthony Gordon to move from Newcastle United to Liverpool, according to an ‘exclusive’ from The Mail.

That ‘exclusive’ (see below) claims that talks between the two clubs have surrounded the possibility of a deal that would see Anthony Gordon moving to Anfield, with cash plus Jarell Quansah heading to St James’ Park.

Quansah is a 21-year-old right-footed central defender who has excelled in a breakthrough season with Liverpool, making 33 first-team appearances. The 6 ft 3 Liverpool defender can also play right-back.

The Mail claims that the deal has broken down, at least for the time being, due to Liverpool not wanting to lose their player.

From the Newcastle United side of things, it is claimed that the supposed willingness to sell Anthony Gordon is simply to ensure the club complies with Premier League PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) before the latest three-year accounting period ends on Sunday 30 June 2024.

It started with claims of Yankuba Minteh set to be sold to ensure Newcastle United kept the right side of PSR, then we have had supposed talks with Chelsea and a potential move for Alexander Isak to Stamford Bridge. Now Anthony Gordon and this Liverpool report. Whilst of course in the background almost daily media claims of Bruno Guimaraes could be off wherever with his £100m transfer release clause triggered.

All we know so far as Newcastle United fans, at least publicly, is that no player has actually been sold, as things stand.

To count towards this current season’s accounts and the PSR three-year period from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2024, with allowed losses of £105m, any sale of a Newcastle player would need to happen this weekend to be included in the financials before the deadline.

So one way or another, we are going to find out the truth of it in the next 36 hours, will Newcastle United be selling one or more players to keep the right side of PSR? Are these media reports on the money, or are they wide of the mark and the Newcastle United owners have the PSR side of things already sorted by other revenues seeing the club ok?

Revealed: Newcastle were ready to sell Anthony Gordon to LIVERPOOL this week before talks broke down – with Jarell Quansah part of proposed deal – as club desperately search for options to avoid PSR points deduction

Newcastle were ready to sell Anthony Gordon to Liverpool this week as they strive to comply with financial rules – but talks over a move have broken down.

The Reds admire the England winger but the proposed deal – said to include defender Jarell Quansah heading in the opposite direction – was not right for them. They did not want to lose Quansah, who they see as a future England international, and also have strength in depth in wide areas.

Liverpool may have proceeded had the package been different, but they did not make an offer after discussions with the Magpies. There is a chance talks could be revived over the weekend.

Gordon is currently with England at the European Championship and, had there been progress, a medical in Leipzig was mooted. Paris Saint-Germain are also thought to admire the 23-year-old.

Newcastle need to sell before June 30 to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules – or risk a Premier League points deduction – and sources have confirmed that selling Gordon, albeit reluctantly, is one avenue that has been explored.

The player is happy at St James’ Park and loves working under Eddie Howe, but he was aware of the talks between his current employers and his boyhood club.
