It is no secret that Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of Real Madrid’s main transfer targets for 2025.

The Merengues have been working on his signing for a few months and as per multiple reliable sources, there is great optimism that the England right-back will arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu as a free agent in the summer.

However, now, the reliable Paul Joyce of The Times has claimed that Real Madrid tried to sign Alexander-Arnold as early as the upcoming January transfer window.

Indeed, the reigning champions of Spain and Europe sent an offer for the 26-year-old Reds mainstay so that they can bring him in next month, given the lack of options at right-back following Dani Carvajal’s season-ending injury.

However, Liverpool emphatically rejected Real Madrid’s offer for the defender for January as they do not wish to lose their key player especially with Arne Slot’s team on track to win the Premier League title.

The negotiations never reached the stage at which numbers were mentioned, with Liverpool offering no encouragement to Real.

The Reds are reluctant to enter into negotiations to sell Alexander-Arnold despite the risk of losing him for nothing in six months. They still harbour hopes of convincing him to sign a new contract and continue at the club.

Furthermore, an alternate report from Ben Jacobs highlights that apart from Liverpool rebuffing Real Madrid’s advances, Alexander-Arnold himself holds no desire to leave Anfield in January and wishes to see out the rest of the season at his boyhood club.

As such, Los Blancos are now focusing on signing the Englishman for free in the summer, with the likelihood of him signing a pre-contract agreement over a four-year deal looking increasingly likely.
