Liverpool are set to reignite their pursuit of Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, prioritising him high on their list of targets for a central midfielder in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to Anfield Watch sources.

The Merseyside club have long held a strong admiration for the 23-year-old Brazilian international, dating back to his days at Flamengo before he eventually signed for Wolves in January 2023 for around £15 million despite interest from Ligue 1 side Lyon, we understand.

He was a winner of the 2022 Copa Libertadores, excelling in the heart of Flamengo's midfield.

"Liverpool are a team I’d play for," he told ESPN Brasil in September 2022. "Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football."

Gomes thrives in a team that boasts numerous strikers and attacking midfielders, making him an ideal fit for a club like Liverpool and the playing style of incoming manager Arne Slot, who is set to join the Anfield club from Feyenoord.

According to sources, several other clubs, including West Ham, are also considering discussions with Wolves regarding Gomes, though it’s not clear at this point which club the youngster would rather move to, or even if he’s open to a switch away from Molineux.

The player’s contract is up with the Midlands club in 2028, with an option of an extra year. FootballTransfers’ Estimated Transfer Value algorithm ranks Gomes at around £16m but Wolves would likely demand more for his services.

Gomes has featured in 33 Premier League matches for Wolves this season - while he earned a debut call-up to the Brazil national side in March following his impressive displays.

Liverpool seeking midfielders

Liverpool are in the market for a central midfielder this summer with the long-term future of Wataru Endo under question. The 31-year-old Japan international shone at times under Jurgen Klopp this season but has faded as the season draws to a close.

The Reds overhauled their midfield sector last summer with Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Arthur Melo departing the club.

In came Endo, Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch but Liverpool are looking to spend again in that area and they are just about to lose Thiago Alcantara.
