Liverpool only want to bid again for striker Alexander Isak if Newcastle United make it clear they are not wasting their time, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

The disgruntled Newcastle star wants to swap the St James’ Park club for Anfield this summer, but Liverpool’s £110 million bid was rejected last month.

The Reds have no plans to return with an improved bid unless Newcastle indicate a willingness to sell the Swedish international.

The Newcastle board has told Isak that he is not for sale this summer and will not be allowed to join Liverpool, which has angered him, according to the Telegraph.

However, this saga is expected to go on until the last days of the summer transfer window, and the Reds will keep waiting to see if the Magpies change their minds.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe does not want to keep Isak against his wishes after claiming that he prefers to have players who want to play for the club on board.

The saga is not ending anytime soon, and Liverpool’s defeat to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield yesterday could trigger them to move for Isak again.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk insisted following the game that they need more attacking reinforcements after losing Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz.

Isak has three more years left on his Newcastle contract, and while they do not need to sell players, this summer could be the only time they get over £100m for him.
