Liverpool maintain perfect WSL start with win over Aston Villa | OneFootball

After a shock win over title contenders Arsenal last weekend, Liverpool continued their perfect start to the 2023/24 Women’s Super League season. The Reds fought off Aston Villa to earn their second win of and clean sheet of the season at Prenton Park.

The two sides last met back in May, with the tie playing out in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Villa are yet to get off the mark and join Everton and Bristol City with zero points on the board so far.

How it went

Despite Aston Villa enjoying a dominant opening 20 minutes, it was the Reds who got the opening goal. A rocket of a shot from Marie Höbinger saw Daphne van Domselaar unable to get anything, giving Liverpool the lead. The visitors enjoyed a resurgence following the goal with Rachel Daly creating several good chances for her side, but none materialised.

The remainder of the first half brought goalscoring opportunities for both sides, however neither were able to capitalise.

The second half got underway with both sides vying for the initial dominance. Despite a good period for the visitors, Daly was unable to find the service needed to find the equaliser. A second goal for the Reds capped off the evening as Natasha Flint converted the assist from Mel Lawley.

With Liverpool two goals up with just over 10 minutes to play, Villa could do little to find a route back into the tie. The win sees Liverpool go second in the table as one of only two teams yet to drop a single league point. The Reds are tied on points with WSL leaders Leicester, behind only on goal difference. For Villa the defeat leaves them in 11th, still yet to get their domestic campaign underway.

Who is up next?

Liverpool will face Leicester away in the Continental Cup before hosting Sunday’s Merseyside Derby at Anfield. The Reds will face an away day at West Ham before heading into the international break.

Aston Villa will face a difficult away day to Arsenal before hosting Rehanne Skinner’s Tottenham Hotspur. The Villans will then host a tough home tie against Chelsea before heading off on international duty.
