Argentine midfielder Alan Varela has been linked with the move to the Premier League and Liverpool are thought to be keen on the 22-year-old defensive midfielder.

He has a long-term contract with the Portuguese club and he is likely to cost a premium. A report from Footmercato claims that the 22-year-old has been likened to the former Argentina international midfielder Javier Mascherano and a number of clubs are keen on him.

Varela is quite young and he is likely to improve with coaching and experience. He could develop into a key player for Liverpool. The Premier League side need to sign a quality defensive midfielder. They need someone who can protect the central defence and break up opposition attacks.
