The were two themes of the first half at Anfield on Tuesday: Liverpool dominance and some erratic goalkeeping from Villarreal’s Gerónimo Rulli.
And those themes continued in the second half, with the Reds getting their reward thanks to some erratic goalkeeping from Rulli.
A ball into the box from Jordan Henderson took a slight nick off Pervis Estupiñán, diverting the ball towards goal and completely wrong-footing the poorly positioned goalkeeper, who could only grasp at thin air as it looped past him into the net on 53 minutes.
Two minutes later the hosts made it 2-0 when Sadio Mané was fed in the box and he poked past Rulli for a quickfire double.
The Yellow Submarine battled bravely in the first half, but it’s a long way back from here.
