It’s still all to play for as we approach the final day of the 2021-22 Premier League season.

After defeating Southampton 2-1 on Tuesday night, Liverpool remain in contention to win the title.

But in order for that to happen, Jurgen Klopp’s side will need to defeat Wolves at Anfield on Sunday and hope that Manchester City slip up against Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium.

City, who have a one-point lead over Liverpool and the superior goal difference, are expected to defeat Villa to claim their fourth league title in five seasons.

But City, perhaps more than any other club, know that anything can happen on the final day of the season.

They recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary of Sergio Aguero’s famous winner against Queens Park Rangers that won them their first Premier League title in the most dramatic fashion.

Will Liverpool win the quadruple this season?

If Liverpool end the season as champions, it would be their third major trophy of an extraordinary season.

They would then find themselves in with a serious chance of winning a historic quadruple. Real Madrid await them in the Champions League final on May 28.

It’s all a far cry from 12 months ago when Gary Neville couldn’t hide as shock after seeing that Liverpool had clinched third spot in the Premier League table following the final round of fixtures.

There were no guarantees that Liverpool would even seal a top-four finish on the final day of last season.

They needed to defeat Crystal Palace and hope that other results went their way – and that’s exactly what happened.

Klopp’s men sealed a 2-0 win at Anfield while their top-four rivals Chelsea and Leicester City were beaten by Aston Villa and Tottenham, respectively.

Gary Neville’s reaction to Liverpool finishing third

“Have they finished third?” Neville asked as the final Premier League table was shown on Sky Sports. “Have they finished third?!”

The former Manchester United captain was genuinely shocked.

He added: “How’s that happened!?”

Presenter Dave Jones asked Neville if it was an “amazing achievement” considering how many problems Liverpool had encountered throughout the season.

“It is,” Neville admitted. “Honestly, for them to lose [Virgil] van Dijk and for Liverpool to come back from those six home defeats on the bounce. Wow. To come back like they have, you have to give them real credit.”

One year later and Neville, like many others, wouldn’t have envisaged that Liverpool would be in contention of winning the quadruple one year later.
