Liverpool have confirmed that Virgil van Dijk will undergo surgery on the injury he sustained in the Merseyside Derby on Saturday.
The Dutchman has suffered cruciate ligament damage following the collision with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
An official statement on the club website read: “Liverpool FC can confirm Virgil van Dijk will undergo surgery on the knee injury he sustained during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Everton.
“The centre-back damaged knee ligaments following an incident involving Blues goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after six minutes at Goodison Park.
“Following surgery, Van Dijk will begin a rehabilitation programme with the club’s medical team to enable him to reach full fitness as soon as possible.”
There has been no timescale set for the 29-year-old’s return but there are various reports that it is unlikely he will play any part in the remainder of the 2020/21 season.
Liverpool drew 2-2 with Everton in a dramatic Merseyside Derby which saw Toffees’ forward Richarlison sent off.
